The following is a link to an Associated Press (AP) article written by Hyung-jin Kim entitled, "SKorean emotions run high over island dispute."
One of the 40-member Korean police contingent stationed on Dokdo to guard the rocks had this to say:
"I always hated Japan and I've come to hate it more these days."
To me, that kind of hatred suggests a problem with Korea's education system, which is geared to fueling anti-Japanese feelings. Without realizing it, by feeding hatred, Koreans are hurting themselves more than they are hurting the Japanese.
Here is a Korean language summary of the article.
Best post yet.
ReplyDeleteEven if South Korea rightfully wins the dispute over the island, I think the hatred will still remain, which is a big problem. But hopefully it will fade away over time. Stop the hate~

ReplyDeletewhat?
Lord,
ReplyDeleteAlmost 100 years ago, Japan incorporated 竹島/Liancourt Rocks peacefully by international law. No one was harmed at all. On the other hand, Korean occupied Takeshima, the Japanese land by force and brutally killed and gave fatal injury to 44 Japanese innocent fishermen. You peopel still keep illegally occupying it and it is more than 55 years.
As I said, Korean illegal occuption was done militarily and 44 Japanese civilians were brutally killed or sevearly injured by Korean Navy and other authorities. 3,929 Japanese fishermen were abducted and detained in Korean jail for 3 years or more, without sufficiant food supply, suffering from T.B. They were left untreated medically, and some of them died without proper medical treatment and Korean didn't even paid for funeral expenses. We don't even know how many of them died now. It was Korea who occupied Japanese territory militarily and slaughtered innocent Japanese civilians.

According to Japan-Korea fishery council, around the Lee sun-man ’s line was declared in 1952, 328 Japanese fishery boats was captured and 3,929 Japanese fishermen was detained by Korean forces and 44 were killed or seriously injured.
The attacks by Korean authority which ended the loss of Japanese lives were as follow.
1949 23th Jan. Japanese fishing boat “第12万栄丸(daijuuni-maneimaru)” was attacked with firearms by Korean ships. One crew died.
1st Feb. Japanese fishing boat “第6・第8ゆたか丸(dairoku daihachi-yutakamaru)” was attacked with firearms by Korean ships. One crew died.
4th May. Japanese fishing boat “大繁丸(ooshigemaru)” was attacked with firearms by Korean ships. One crew died.
1952 11th Feb. Japanese fishing boat “第3石宝丸(daisan-sekihoumaru)” was attacked with firearms by Korean ships. One crew died.
1953 4th Feb. Japanese fishing boat “第1大邦丸(daiichi-daihoumaru)” and “第2大邦丸(daiini-daihoumaru)”was attacked with firearms by Korean military. A chief fisherman Mr. Juushirou (or Juujirou) Seto died.
1955 14th Feb. Japanese fishing boat “第6あけぼの丸(dairoku-akebonomaru)” was attacked and intentionally collided by Korean warship and sunk out at the sea of 生月島(ikitsuki-island). 21 crew died.
This is a testimony of former captain of Japanese fishery boat who was detained in Korean for 3 and a half years.
"The former captain of a Japanese fishing boat who was illegally captured and detained in Korea by Korean the navy for three and a half years has testified how viciously a Korean military ship raked the Japanese civilian (fishery boats) with machine-gun fire to threaten them. He was appalled to hear the head engineer of the Korean naval vessel say, "It's going to be a massacre," while they were still machine-gunning two Japanese fishing boats."

This is a Korean video which captured Japanese fishermen who were attacked, abducted and detained by Korean authority near Chejudo around 1950. You can see how he was bashed or maltreated by Korean authority. It is around 2'54".

After the defeat of WWII in 1945, Japan was stil occupied by U.S. and had not even Self Defence Force yet. When Agreement Between Japan and the Republic of Korea Concerning Fisheries(日韓漁業協定) was signed in 1965, Japanese government asked Korea to give almost 4000 Japanese fishermen who were abducted and detained in Koren jail, Korean government demanded to release 472 Zainichi Korean or Choson who commited serious crimes or habitual criminals in Japanes jail and give special residencial permission in Japan (not sending back to Korea !!) to them in exchange.
So, lord, stop using "victim card" against us, since it is not Japan who is aggressor in this case, but it is actually Korea who are to be blamed for its brutality.
As for the article, I don't mind being hated by Korean at all. I enjoy Korean reaction, because it is totally different from ours. There's nothing to lose for us, anyway. Rather, I believe it is the best way for Japanese to protect our own country. I just wish Korean who hate Japanese stop coming to my county, that's all. But Korean who has fair mind are all welcome here, indeed.

lord,
ReplyDeleteBut you actually lied about Kawakami's book. There's no lie what I wrote. If you insist, you need to prove what is a lie. This is a place for talk about Takeshima/Dokdo, not Japanese annexation.
Now, you said I lied. Well, let's see who is a liar?
You cited distorted translation of Kawakami's book done by Korean scholar without checking the original documents. I warned you that it is not true, but you have failed to show what Kawakami actually said so far. Then I again warned you if you don't show the evidence to back up your translation, you again failed. Hence, we have to conclude that it is you who is a liar, not us.

It shows how ignorant you are...
First of all, there is no single documents that Korean ever had effective control over Takeshima/Dokdo before 1905.
Secondly, Japanese government made sure that there is no trace of being occupied by any other countries, including Korea.
Thirdly, there is no need for "nation" to "declare" the sovereignty to the other party in order to get admitted their "effective control" in the international law arena. It is only Korean scholar who are insisting this. If you insist, show me any proof (done by other than Korean scholar) to support your claim. Japanese Navy were constructing watchtower on the island in 1905, but Korean didn't even know about those Japanese activities on the island until 1906. How can you claim that Korean had "effctive control"? If they didn't lodge the protest, it means they admitted the Japanese sovereignty over the island.
Lastly, Japanese fishery businessman Nakai Yozaburou did constructed the hut for seal hunting and Japanese government considered it as a evidence of "effective control", thus they incorporated it into Shimane. Were there any Korean hut on the island in 1904-1905? No, Nada.
Well, I really think you need to study more basic knowledge of the issue. Or you will never ever convince anyone on this blog.
Kaneganese says Liancourt Rocks was incorporated "peacefully" Well Kaneganese Japan's own political and military records prove you wrong. We know the Japanese annexed the island in Japan's hostile bid to control the Korean peninsula. So I warn you to stop whitewashing the past or you will continue to give yourself a black eye.
ReplyDeleteJapan's-Military-On-Dokdo
The political circumstances surrounding Japan's incorporation were rotten as well.
Japan's-Bogus-Claim
We also know Japan's geographic basis for incorporating Liancourt Rocks was totally off.
Dokdo-Must-Be-Korean
There is no way in Hell Japan can ever have Dokdo Takeshima and still arrive at an equitable solution to this problem as long as Japan's claim is based on a the circumstances of 1905 Kaneganese. That is why Japan continues to fail to win public support.
Kaneganese, there was no Japanese "hut" on Liancourt Rocks when Japan annexed the islets. The logbooks of the Tsushima said it was in ruin. Nakai Yozaburo was not "living on" Liancourt Rocks at the time of Japan's incorporation, he was conducting his activity from Korea's Ulleungdo Island. Nakai Yozuburo was just one of hundreds of ignorant, illiterate violent squatters illegally fishing and logging on Ulleungdo since at least 1899 and probably much earlier.
Violent-Japanese-On-Ulleungdo
You have to give up your propaganda Kaneganese, the cat is out of the bag about Japan's illegal 1905 incorporation. Any attempts to deny these facts when the primary documents are staring you right in the face simply makes you look foolish.
lord,
ReplyDeleteIn case you don't even realize, all the pro-Korean site you showed are listed on the "pro-Korean site" on our blog. Check it out by yourself. We all know what those sites says. First two sites are nothing but a propaganda.
If you want to have decent discussion on this blog, please study Korean/Japanese documents by yourself and bring the original documents to backl up your claim, not the url of those sites. If you don't raed the originals by yourself, you will be fooled by their manipulation.
Remember, Korean government slaughtered their own people much much more than Japanese killed during the 35 years of occupation. And North Korean king are still keep killing their own people every day even now. Korean government have enough reason to use Takeshima and textbook issue to teach Korean kids to hate Japanese so that they don't see the fact that Korean Government does lie and they are actually worse than Japanese Imperial government when it comes to the numbers of killing Korean people.
Holy Cow Kaneganese!!
ReplyDeleteDo you how many people Japanese killed between 1910 and 1945?
What you just said is an outrage to anyone who fought against your ancestors in WWII. If anyone is guilty of propaganda it would be you.
Anyway, he is what Japan was doing around northeast Asia while they silently annexed Liancourt Rocks without an official external announcement of public display. It's no wonder even most Japanese had no idea Japan annexed Liancourt Rocks. They didn't even mention the name when they supposedly "announced" it.

lord,
ReplyDeleteYou keep ruuning away from presenting your evidence to support your claim and what is now? You just shut up your eyes and only hear what is soft to your emotion? Well, as long as you don't show me the origninal document by Kawakami, you have no right to call anyone a liar because it is you who are lying.
Anyway, as I said, I don't mind Korean hate Japanese at all. I kind of enjoy to see the emotional reaction by them, especially the way they call us liar when they can't even point out what is a "lie" and what is truth.
Actually, I sort of think it is a good timing since Korean economy seems to be going to jump into the IMF-ish situation soon. I don't want to spend any single yen of our taxpayers' money to help Korean government anymore. Teachers' guideline for the handbook helped President Lee to gain popularity back and I think that is enogh for now,

Kaneganese, I'm pretty sure that Kawakami did in fact say Dokdo was not visible from Ulleungdo. His statement was also cited in a publication by a Japanese man (Hideki Kajimura) So obviously it is not a translation error if he is Japanese too.
ReplyDeleteYou can see Kawakami's quote on page ten of Hideki Kajimura's article below.
Hideki-Kajimura
Another Japanese man also quoted Kawakami as saying Dokdo was not visible. His name was Kazuo Hori.
He cites Kawakami on page three of his publication below.
Kazuo-Hori
So you see it seems that Kawakami did in fact assert that it was not possible to see Dokdo from Ulleungdo. Or at the very least it was published by even Japanese authors that he did. In other words you were wrong to call "Lord" a liar.
It's not a nice thing to call people names Kaneganese whether you feel you are right or wrong. You should say you are sorry. I think you can be a very mean spirited person sometimes, either that or you have problem controlling your temper.
Steve Barber,
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you ask your Korean wife to translate what Lord has been writing lately before you start judging who is meansprited.
Gerry, exactly what is your problem with my Korean wife? You seem to harp on about her a lot these days. It seems like both you and Kaneganese have trouble separating the debate at hand from your personal emotions. Maybe you both need a vacation.
ReplyDeleteAs for Kaneganese, I remember her calling other people liars on this forum before and she was wrong. You'd think she'd know better by now.
Gerry, stick with the tour and keep my loved ones out of this.
Calm down, Steve. You seem to have a problem controlling your temper.
ReplyDeleteI did not say I have a problem with your wife. I just suggested that you get her to translate Lord's posts for you since you need her to read and translate the crap you write about Dokdo.
Since you did not mention Lord's trash talk, I just assumed that you could not read what he wrote.
Your wife is not an issue here, except for the fact that she mistranslates your stuff for you, so stop using her for your silly strawman arguments.
