1795-1800: Dong Yeodo (東輿圖) - Ulleungdo (鬱陵島)

Below is a map of the Korean island of Ulleungdo (鬱陵島) from the "Dong Yeodo" (東輿圖) atlas, which was made sometime between 1795 and 1800. The map is stored in Japan at the University of Tsukuba Library (筑波大学附属図書館).

The map shows a small island just off the east shore of Ulleungdo labeled as "于山" (Usan). Korea claims that the "island of Usan" (于山島) was the old Korean name for "Dokdo" (Liancourt Rocks), but this map and many others show that Usando was just a neighboring island of Ulleungdo. The map also shows five small islands off the southern shore of Ulleungdo. It is unclear what these islands were referring to, but several old maps of Ulleungdo show these same five, unnamed islands. In total, the map shows Ulleungdo with six, small neighboring islands, the most prominent of which is Usando (于山島).

  1. Does anyone have anymore information on this map--for example, the date? Also, is there a picture of the atlas cover on the Web site?

  2. Gerry,

I googled in Tsukuba Uni Library site, and got this.

    東輿圖 トウヨズ (Tou-Yo-Zu)
[製作地不明] (Unknown for the place it made)
    [製作者不明] (Unknown for the maker)
    [李朝後期] (Late Lee Dynasty)

    This is all I got.

There seems to be no cover, but you can see 17 books of them here and the information I gave you above.

  5. Gerry,

Another map from the same site, 東輿圖(朝鮮古圖) 17, has a word "牛" (cow) at the place of Jukdo. Is this the same meaning as Usando?

Additionally, the map included many (more than 5) rocks islets at the southern coast, which is interesting.

  6. Pacifist,

I think you are looking at the map of Jejudo (濟州島), which is off the southern coast of Korea. On that map, it looks similar to Ulleungdo, but it has more islands around it. It also has an island off its east coast called 牛島.

  7. Gerry,

You are right, it was Jejudo...
I misunderstood because the island has a most prominent islet at east side. Thanks.
