If anyone can give me more details of the book, I will add it to the post.
By the way, I would like to point out that this is an example of an island being used as a border.
Infomation on the text can be found HERE.
A study of the territorial dispute between Japan and Korea over Liancourt Rocks, a small cluster of barren, rocky islets in the Sea of Japan that Japanese call Takeshima and Koreans call Dokdo.

ReplyDeleteI've never seen this document before. I'm going to add this to my list of Eastern limit series.
Gerry,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the interesting document.
BTW, it says the 極東 (eastern limit) was east end of Ulleungdo - it didn't say that the island itself was a border.
In these days, western idea of border was already introduced to the modern Japan (Japan in the Meiji era), so the border is the same as today's border, I think.
Pacifist,
ReplyDeleteIt said "Ulleungdo's eastern edge" (鬱陵島 東端) was the "eastesn boundary" (東境). The eastern edge of the island means the island was the boundary. Anyway, that is what it says.
Gerry,
ReplyDeleteIn my opionion, it says that the east edge of Ulleungdo is the far eastest place of its territory, which means the borderline runs at the very close place of the east edge of Ulleungdo but not on the island.
Gerry,
ReplyDeleteThe oroginal text says, "極東ハ欝陵島東端" - the far eastest point is the east end of Ulleungdo.
Gerry, to follow is my translation of the second item (location).
