1883 Japanese Map of Ulleungdo

The map of Ulleungdo below was included in the 1883 report, "Concerning the Report by Ministry of Interior Secretary Higaki, who was despatched to Chosun's Ulleungdo" (朝鮮国蔚陵島出張桧垣内務省書記官復命ノ件). It was made when the Japanese residents were evacuated from Ulleungdo in 1883.

There are a few interesting things about this map. One is that that Jukdo is labeled as 竹島 ("Takeshima" in Japanese & "Jukdo" in Korean) instead of 竹嶼. Many Japanese maps had labeled the island as 竹嶼. Another interesting thing about the map it that it shows Gwaneumdo as a cape (觀音崎) instead of an island (觀音島). Also, the map shows five or six rocks off the southern coast of Ulleungdo, which is similar to what many old Korean maps of Ulleungdo show.

  1. Pacifist,

I am sorry, but I tried to repost your map below your comment instead of to the side, but I could not do it. I wanted to make it a little bigger in the screen. Could you please repost the map using the "None" layout?

  2. Pacifist,

You do not need to repost the map. I have done it myself.

By the way, are sure it is an 1883 map? I had it listed as 1886.

  4. Gerry,

I'm not sure whether it was published in 1883 but it was a report of the officer about the evacuation of Japanese residents from Ulleungdo which took place in September 1883. So I don't think the report was published 3 years after the incident.

If it was 1883, it must be an interesting one because it was made just after the Lee Gyu-won's investigation.

I don't think this Japanese Map year 1883 mentioned to write "Small Six Islands小六島".They wrote those small rocks just the result of inspection.

But this map is interesting that Daetsom竹島(JUKDO) seems to be most prominent neighbor island/rocks of Ullunegdo. In addition,Jukdo in this map similar like Usan in 朝鮮地圖,the worm-like shape.
    .
I guess "Small Six Islands" would be the map concept for Korean before 1882, before stop the empty policy of Ullungdo.
    .
"The Small Six Islands" are mostly in the local maps of Ullungdo and the combination of 2rocks-2rocks-1rocks and one "Most Prominent最著者”island"of Usan layout.Ofcourse this "Usan/Usando is ”most prominent”最著者 island of the "Small Six Islands小六島" like the comment of 皇城新聞 in 1899.
    .
    Also "Small Six Islands" is shown in the Maps Mr.Gerry had already posted below;
    .
    1.鬱陵島図形1711c.a?
check carefully there is "Small Six Islands" in the maps of edge.
Two rocks in the southwest, two in south, one in southeast and most prominent 所謂于山島 in east with bamboo field海長竹田.
    .
    2. 朝鮮地圖,middle of 18C.
竹島(Jukdo)is most prominent island of "Small Six islands" and it is similar with 竹島JUKDO in the Japanese Map of Ullegundo year 1883.
    .
    3.興地圖 middle of 18C.
    4.海東地圖 middle of 18C.
    5.地乘,Late of 18C.
    6.廣輿圖Early in 19C.
    7.靑邱圖 1834.8.靑丘要覽Undated.
"所謂于山島”or 于山 is most prominent island of the "Small Six Islands" in the maps above local maps of Ullungdo 3-8.
    8.大東總図 in 海東地図(year unknown).
.This map design is not the local map but the whole maps of chosun. Also it has "Small Six Islands" including most prominent island of Usando. But Usando in this map locates in the west of Ullungdo.Does anyone know the year of this maps?
    .
    After 1882,the concept of "Small
Six Islands" would disappear because of the inspection like 李奎遠.Those inspections provides more infomation and details of geography of Ulleungdo and surrounoding rocks .His recognization of Usan is the old other name of Ullungdo, so he wrote JUKDO instead of Usan/Usando.His map has many rocks, including Jukdo竹島 and so on.
    .
The rocks in 大韓全図1899 don't have "Six small islands".There is five small rocks and those seems to be quoted from the disign of 鬱陵島外図.
    .
So,"于山島竹島" in the 皇城新聞 seems to be one island,Usan/Usando from the Maps or articles, Jukdo from local or Lee called?Anyway,it is clear that Usando is never Lianocurt Rocks.
    .
In the 新大韓地誌 in 1907 there is no "small Six Isands" in the map and is most prominent neighbor island is ”竹”instead of Usan like 大韓地誌 in 1899.
