1600s - Map of Silla, Goguryo, & Baekje Regions

The map below is from a 1600s atlas entitled "Old Maps of China & Joseon" (支那朝鮮古地圖 - 지나조선고지도), which is stored in the National Library of Korea (國立中央圖書館 - 국립중앙도서관). The map is entitled "Map of the Original Regions of Silla, Goguryo, and Baekje" (新羅高勾麗百濟肇造區域之圖 - 신라고구려백제조조구역지도).

Below is a cutout from the map that shows a single island off the east coast of Korea labeled as "Usan-guk - now Ulleungdo" (羽山國 今 鬱陵島 - 우산국, 지금 울릉도). This map is more evidence that Usan-guk was recognized as only one island, not two, during the time of the Silla Kingdom.

  2. GTOMR,

    You are welcome.

Besides the map showing Usan-guk, I also thought it was interesting that it also seems to show the mud flats off the west coast of Korea.

  4. When I look at the island in the far east, I would suggest that there are/is at least one other island as the two words/names suggest.

  5. sorry i haven`t read the translation.
But wasn`t Usanguk referring to Juk-Do and not to Ulleung-Do as a whole? Isn`t it possible that the map has some flaws?

  6. Oh I forgot to add. The term -Guk means land, like Dae-Han-Min-Guk means Korea or Mi-Guk means America. The term -Do means island, like Ulleung-Do or Dok-Do.

It is possible that the name Usan-Guk is referring to many islands, as the name Usan-Land would suggest.

  8. I don't understand if this proves anything related to dokdo..

what do you want to say? Gerry..

Do you know anything about U-san guk?

it refers to country at east sea forming couple of islands..

How can you post such a thing like this when you know just a little about the subject.

there are a lot of people researching at this subject.

and it's kind of complicated. I wonder how you are not feeling foolish putting up these nonesense when you know very little.

You think you're some kind of genius? Be shamed...
