New Poll: How should the dispute over Liancourt Rocks (Dokdo/Takeshima) be settled?

I have started a new poll that asks the following question:

How should the dispute over Liancourt Rocks (Dokdo/Takeshima) be settled?

  1. Let the International Court of Justice settle it.
  2. Make it a neutral nature preserve administered by both Korea and Japan.
  3. Neither

You can vote in the column on the right side of the blog.

  1. Ha ha ha!! What a lame excuse for a "poll" Gerry!! Since when do you and your Takeshima lobbyists determine the options here?

I don't see "Leave the situation as the way it is.." on your "poll" Why not?

As you know the current boundary in place is the most equitable solution to resolve the dispute in the first place. Why is the current boundary so unreasonable Gerry et al?

Given the politics, geographics, and economics of Dokdo region in today's modern world, there is no reason at all why Japan should have Dokdo, Gerry.

  2. Steve Barber,

    You can vote "neither."

Also, I wrote the question and the possible answers by myself.

  3. I think this is more constructive than the former poll. At least, it's fair because it is no use of block votes.

  4. Japan should surrender its claims. Not because they aren't valid -- they do have a good claim on the islands. In reality, though, forcing the issue would have been about as popular and smart as saying, back when Japanese owned more than 50% of the land in Hawaii, that we'll be incorporating a new prefecture, thanks. Seriously, the only options are a) Japan, surrender the claims in the way that brings the most goodwill, b) go to war over the stupid islands, or c) keep doing nothing very well.

Thanks for this resource by the way, it's excellent.

  5. Thank you, Peter.

It sounds like you should vote "neither."

By the way, you omitted two other options. One is that Korea could surrender her claim, and the other is that Korea and Japan could both surrender their claims and make Liancourt Rocks into neutral nature preserve unavailable for development by either country.
