(Takeshima, which consists of an east and a west island has now been drawn on detailed Japanese topographical map. The characters "隠岐の島町" (Okinoshima Town) indicate possession.

The Geographical Survey Institute of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport published, for the first time, the topographical map of Takeshima (South Korea: Tokdo) with a scale of 1/25,000, which shows the details of the islets. Both Japan and Korea claim ownership of the islets.

The map was made using a space satellite image, which shows Takeshima more clearly than past maps. Previous maps only showed outlines of the islets since detailed investigations could not be made. The map shows not only Japanese territory, but also the geographical features of the territory.

The need for an updated topographical map was especially felt when the new Oki Airport was opened in July 2006. In addition, to the Okinoshima town's in giving birth by the amalgamation in October, 2004, and having become this town belonging, Geographical Survey Institute reformed after an interval of nine years. Takeshima formerly belonged to Gokasho village(五箇所村), Shimane Prefecture.

It is a topographical map of this town that divides into five pieces that Takeshima who consists of the two island in east and west appears. Among these, the east island (Higashijima : 東島) of the altitude 97 meters and west island (Nishijima : 西島) of 168 meters were published while having shown the Nishimura(西村) district.

Takeshima was impossible to be mapped in detail due to the illegal occupancy of South Korea, since the topographical map of 1/25,000 was usually made based on the photograph and the field investigation. However, it was decided to be possible to supplement because the prospect had looked up in the topographic survey that used the space satellite image.

The PR room of the insititute announced that "It is an obligation of Geographical Survey Institute to arrange Japanese territory on the map. At last, Takeshima's details were able to be displayed though the field investigation etc. were not able to have been done."

To use it to enlighten the Takeshima problem, Shimane Prefecture exhibits this topographical map in the Takeshima Reference room that installed it in old prefectural museum in the Matsue City town

Have a good new year's day. And enjoy your holiday.

    GTOMR,

Wow! I'm impressed that the weather forecasting on Takeshima is available in such a detail on the web. Thank you for a good information. It looks like we are having snowfalls on new year's day on Takeshima.

  6. Kaneganese,

I am having trouble understanding your translation. I have corrected the first three paragraph, but I am not sure what the forth paragraph is saying.

I understand the first sentence of the paragraph ("The need for an updated topographical map was especially felt when the new Oki Airport was opened in July 2006."), but I do not understand what town is being talked about and what was "amalgamated" with what. Could you please recheck your translation for me.

    Happy new year.

  7. Thank you, Gerry

They need to update the maps since new airport had open, and Gokashomura, to which formerly belonged were amalgated into newly-born Okinoshima town. The map wad made 9 years ago, and it needed to update new geographical features. That's what is written,

Since I was too busy, I used automatic translation service on the web and changed some part in order to save my time. That's why they sound wiered. Honestly, I'm glad to hear you think it's strange, since I thought so, too. But I wasn't perfectly sure if I'm the one who don't understand the sentence or not.

  9. Just for your information,

Okinoshima Town's (隠岐の島町) Takeshima home page (Japanese).

The town has only 16,608 population. I hope they can regain enough access to Takeshima for fishing soon without being harrased by Korean Authorities again.

  10. Thank you, Kaneganese.

So there were two towns, "Okinoshima Town" and Gokashomura, but now Gokashomura has merged with "Okinoshima Town," leaving only one town, right?

I was confused because I did not realize that there was a town named "Okinoshima Town," which sames like a strange name for a town since it seems to translate as "the island town of Oki." Is my translation of the name, right?

  11. 平成16年10月1日に西郷町(旧)、布施村(旧)、都万村(旧)、五箇村(旧)の四町村合併により新生「隠岐の島町」として新たな歴史を力強く刻み始めました。

It seems four villages have merged and the new town which has been formed from the four village was named as Okinosimamachi=Town of Oki island/Oki -island town.

  12. Thank you, Ponta. I didn't know that.

    Gerry,

In regards to 隠岐の島町(Okinoshima-cho), I think "Okinoshima" is used as a proper noun, thus it should be translated simply as Okinoshima Town, or Town of Okinoshima.

It looks like there are four towns, including Okinoshima Town, in Oki district, according to Shimane Prefecture.

  13. Kaneganese & Ponta,

I do not think 隠岐の島町 is referring to one town, but rather should be translated as "the towns of Oki Island," which seems to consist of four towns (西郷町, 布施村, 都万村, 五箇村). Look at the chart on THIS LINK.

Isn't that chart showing the history of the mergers of the towns and villages on the island?

Also, could someone please put the English names next to the four towns?

  14. Gerry,

Today, there are four towns in Oki District. Ama-cho, Nishinoshima-cho, Chibu-mura, and Okinoshima-cho. So it may be safe to translate as Okinoshima Town, since there are three more towns in Oki. And as you say, it looks like Okinoshima Town was newly made from former 4 small villages, 西郷町(Saigo-Cho), 布施村(Fuse-Mura), 都万村(Tsuma-Mura), 五箇村(Gokasho-Mura). It is confusing even for Japanese. 町(Cho) means town, and 村(Mura) means village.

  15. Kaneganese,

It looks like 布施村(Fuse-Mura), 都万村(Tsuma-Mura), and 五箇村(Gokasho-Mura) combined with 西郷町(Saigo-Cho), and that Saigo-Cho is one of the four towns or villages: (西郷町(Saigo-Cho), 布施村(Fuse-Mura), 都万村(Tsuma-Mura), 五箇村(Gokasho-Mura).

I do not see 隠岐の島町 on the list. Bsides, it seems strange to have の in a town name.

  16. Gerry,

Actually, town's home page says that English name is Town Okinoshima. Maybe we should use this name? I understand that Japanese Town's name somehow sounds wierd to Native speakers.

Can you see the last sentence in pink on the list? It says "平成16年10月 隠岐の島町誕生"( October, 2004 Okinoshima Town was born)". Okinoshima -Cho" is on the list here too. It is a newly named town into which one town and three villages emerged into, 西郷町(Saigo-Cho), 布施村(Fuse-Mura), 都万村(Tsuma-Mura), 五箇村(Gokasho-Mura). I hope it makes sence to you.
