1919 National Geographic Map of Korea

Below is a map of Korea from a July 1919 National Geographic article. The map shows Ulleungdo labeled as "Matsu Shima." Though the article, itself, has nothing to do with Liancourt Rocks, it is still well worth reading. Read the whole article in PDF form HERE. You will not regret it. 1. Gerry,

Thanks a lot for showing us the interesting book. It was fun to read it, it made us feel as if we were in Korea almost a hundred years ago. Many photos are also interesting.

  2. Pacifist,

Well, I did not really do anything except link to article, but, anyway, I thought it was an interesting article, too.

Actually, I had already seen all the pictures in the article because I have a National Geographic book entitled, "Korea, the Hermit Nation" (은장의 나라), which includes all the pictures in the article and more. However, what was interesting for me was seeing the pictures in the context of the article they originally appeared in, instead of just a collection of photos with captions.

  3. Beautiful pictures. It's really good to see that those ordinary people 100 years ago got pictured. At least, we can see those Korean were not deprived of their own culture at all from 日帝 in 1919. They are extremely Korean.

And it's interesting that Ulleungdo was not labelled as Ulleungdo, but Matsushima. Even for American, it was Matsushima back then?
