1816 - 大日本接壌三国之全図 - 大阪 其由堂・旭栄堂合梓

This 1816 map shows Ulleungdo labeled as both "Ulleungdo" (蔚陵島) and "Cheonsando" (千山島), which was a common misspelling of Usando (于山島). There is also more writing on the island but I cannot read it. You can view the full map HERE.
If someone could tell me what else is written on the island and the English spelling of the Japanese names, I would appreciate it.

  1. Japanese label on the Ulleungdo seems to be

    "鬱陵島" Utsuryo-to
    "イソダケ Isodake
    弓嵩島" Isodake-shima
    "千山國" Senzan-koku

According to Hokkaido Uni Library's site, it is a copy of Hayashi Shihei's map, but it lacks Ezo Country and north of them.

    日本周辺に蝦夷国、琉球国、朝鮮国の図を示す。林子平「三国通覧輿地路程全図」の模倣なるも蝦夷国以北はなし。

  2. correction

"but it lacks Ezo Country and north of them."

"but it lacks northern part to Ezo Country."

  3. Thank you, Kaneganese. Here is what it looks like to me.

    蔚陵嶋
    イソダケ
    弓嵩
    千山島

I was thinking that this map is another example of Ulleungdo being referred to both as "Ulleungdo" (蔚陵嶋) and as "천산도" (千山島), which was alternate spelling of "Usando" (于山島).

  4. Gerry,

You are right about "弓嵩". There is no 島.
But 千山島 doesn't seem right. It looks like 千山國 to me.
