1882, 9th Day of 5th Lunar Month -- Lee Gyu-won (李奎遠) Sails Around Ulleungdo

In 1882 on the 30th day of the 4th lunar month, Ulleungdo Inspector Lee Gyu-won (李奎遠) arrives on the Korean island of Ulleungdo and stays until the 11th of the 5th lunar month inspecting and surveying the island. On the 9th day, Inspector Lee and his crew board a small boat at Little Hwangto Cove (小黃土邱尾) and begin to circle Ulleungdo in a clockwise direction with the intent of going to the east side of the island. Inspector Lee describes the trip in the diary entry below.

There are a few inconsistencies between the diary entry and Inspector Lee's map. The first is that Inspector Lee wrote that they reached Hyangmok Cove (香木邱尾) before reaching Big Hwangto Cove (大黄土邱尾), but going in the direction they were going, they should have reached Big Hwangto Cove before reaching Hyangmok Cove, according to Inspector Lee's map. Another inconsistency is that the diary entry mentions "Jukam" (竹岩), but the map does not show it.

There are also a couple of confusing things about the diary entry. One is that it says there are two islands, and it gives two names, "Dohang” (島項) and “Jukdo" (竹島也), but it gives only one set of measurements, without specifying if it is for just one island or both islands.

Another confusing thing is the location of Wadal Ungdong Cove First, the map does not show a beach for the cove, so we cannot be sure if it was on the shore of the main island or somewhere else. Second, the map shows the cove between "Seokganju Cave" (名石間朱穴) and "Ship Plank Cove” (船板邱尾), both of which the diary describes as being north of "Dohang" (島項) and "Jukdo" (竹島), but modern-day Wadal Village (臥達里) is south of Gwaneumdo (觀音島), the island Inspector Lee seemed to label as "Dohang" on his map. Third, the report also describes Wadal Ungdong Cove as being a harbor inside one or both of the two neighboring islands (其内浦). Finally, the report describes it as a place you go into with stone walls on the left and right. It also says that when the current goes in and out of the cove, it makes sounds like the musical tempo of drums and gongs. That seems to be describing reverberations inside some kind of enclosed space, possibly a cave.

I also have one opinion on the description in the diary of the "rock that floats upright" (一石浮立) and "looks like a Bodhisattva" (形如弥勒佛). I think it was describing a rock in the water whose base had been eroded by the sea water, leaving a kind of mushroom-head shaped rock that is especially noticeable at low tide. Such a rock might look as if it were floating on the water. As for it looking like a Bodhisattva, Inspector Lee seemed to have been thinking of a painting or statue of a Bodhisattva levitating, meaning he was floating in the air slightly off the ground.

I will stop with my comments here and let people judge for themselves. Here is Inspector Lee's diary entry for the 9th day of the 5th Lunar Month in 1882

The following is Inspector Lee's diary entry of the trip made that day.
The 9th (初九日)

On the 9th (甲午) there is a red sunrise (朝霞), but the day is clear (午晴). We hold our morning religious service (晨朝) and pray to the Mountain God (山祭祈祷). Sea cloud cover is thin The mountain mist (山嵐) is damp (漏濕). After breakfast (朝飯後), we board a boat (乗船) and depart (離發). We row (以櫓力) out past (越) the first shallow (一湫) breakers (水宗). Then we head east (次向東) and go about 10 ri (而行十餘里) to reach (至) Hyangmok Cove (香木邱尾), but even though it is called a harbor (則名雖謂浦), the wind and waves (風波) pound us (衝突). As for the shape of the rocks facing the sea (臨海岩形) many are strange (多有奇恠). Most of the red sandalwood trees are among them (其中紫丹香木最多).
Northwest Corner of Inspecter Lee's 1882 Map
We still row (仍以櫓力) gradually forward (次次前進) and reach a harbor (至一浦). The harbor (此浦) is Big Hwangto Cove, the very harbor at which we spent the night the day before we went into the mountains (卽前日山行時一宿大黄土邱尾也). Since there is no need to cover old ground (今不必疊床), we immediately launch the boat (而卽爲放船) and go quite a few ri (行幾許里) to reach (到) Daepung Harbor (待風浦). The shape of the harbor (浦形) and that of (亦與) Hyangmok Harbor (香木浦) are roughly the same (略同矣). The name “Daepung” (待風之稱) comes from (由於) using it to wait for fair winds (以待順風), but as a nickname (而稱名), this is actually an inappropriate name (此實不符之名也). The strangeness of the rocks on the shoreline (浦邊岩石之奇), the luxuriantly dense growth of valuable wood (珍恠之材鬱密), the difficult, mountainous paths (崎路之難行)--though I write, I cannot record it all (書不可盡記). Therefore, we launch the ship (仍爲放船) and row (以櫓力) down past (進下経) Hyeonjakji (玄斫支) to reach (到) the Japanese Ship Landing (倭船艙). These ports are the same ones we already passed by and had lunch at the day we entered Nari-dong (則此等浦 卽前日入于羅里洞時 所経中火之處也), so, of course, it would be wrong to again record them (亦不可更録矣). Therefore, we launch the boat and gradually move on (仍爲放船漸下).
Next to there is a peak Its height is several thousand jang It is shaped like the edge of garlic (形如蒜稜), so it is called “Garlic Peak” (名日蒜峯). A few ri farther (其下幾里許) there is “Dae Rock.” Its height is several thousand jang (高爲数千丈), and it is so towering it is an amazing sight. On the foothills behind it (其後山麓) there is a big stream (有大川). In the interior (其内), several ranges of peaks overlap (峯巒数疊) to form a screen (爲屏), and beneath them (而其下) there again is a waterfall (又有瀑布一線), streaming layer after layer down to the sea (層層落海者), which, of course, is a grand sight (亦一壯観也). The shape of the mountain below that (其下山形) is a tall wall of layered rock (石壁層峻). In the water offshore is Jukam The name alone implies (名色只) it is overgrown with bamboo (有竹叢生). Its height is several hundred jang (高爲数百丈), and its base is steep and bare (而山麓嵂屼).

North Shore of Inspector Lee's 1882 Map
Also there is a large, unnamed rock Its height is dozens of jang There is also a wide, flat, level rock (又有廣平盤石) that can hold dozens of people (可容数十人). Below that, at the foot of the mountain (其下山足), there are two standing rocks aligned east and west (有東西雙立岩石). As for the eastern rock (東岩則), it has one trunk (一根) and two heads (両頭). Its height is several hundred jang As for the western rock (西岩則), it appears threatening (形容険悪). Its height is close to 1,000 jang They appear like two brothers standing together Next to them is also a lofty rock standing straight up (其傍又矗石直立) several hundred jang (数百丈). It is called (名曰) Choktae Rock (燭台岩也). Beside that is another rock floating upright It looks like a Bodhisattva (形如弥勒佛), and at the shore is a rock cave (而其海邊有石穴) that is reddish purple (色紫) with lightly dripping sea water (海水細滴). It is called "Seokganju Cave" (名石間朱穴), but it is not red orcher (而不是爲石朱也). Beyond that is a small harbor called (其下有一小浦名曰) “Ship Plank Cove” (船板邱尾), where there are traces of temporary shelters (而有結幕痕). Behind that is (其後有) a long valley with traces of trees being dragged (長谷曳木之痕矣).
In the sea on the south side are two small islands They look like cows lying down (形如臥牛), but one is turned to the right (而一爲右旋) and one is turned to the left (一爲左旋). Each, on one side (各其一便則), has groves of young bamboo (稚竹有叢), and, on the other side (一便則), weeds worthlessly grow (卉雑腐生). The height is several hundred jang The width is several * of land The length is five- or six-hundred paces People call it (人云) “Dohang” (島項) and they also call it (亦云) “Jukdo (竹島也). The circumference is about 10 ri It is too dangerous to climb
Inside is a harbor named (其内浦名) “Wadal Ungtong Cove” (臥達雄通邱尾), but the current is very strong (而水勢太強), so a ship would have difficulty entering (船路難進). Even on a day with no wind or waves (雖無風無波之日), the rocking of the boat (船之搖動) is like that of a lightly drifting gourd dipper (如瓢子輕漂之像). It is a place one must be extremely careful Therefore, I carefully look left and right at the stone walls (仍察左右石壁), which are layers of large and small rocks (大小層巌). They look strange and dangerous The tempo of the tide going in and out (潮汐進退緩急) is sometimes like the sound of a beating drum, and sometimes like the sound of a ringing gong (箇中自有鼓鼓然錚錚然).  It is the tempo of music
Northeast Corner of Inspector Lee's 1882 Map
We board the ship and go down (乗船而下). The cliffs wind like those of Hangju’s Mount Seok-jong The shores of the harbors to which we sailed today (此日周回之各浦沿邊) had nine caves where fur seals and sea lions bear and raise their young (有九窟海狗水牛之産育處). The coastal people who come to the island to build ships (而入島造船之海民) use nets and guns to capture them to eat their meat (以網以銃捕捉食肉矣).
The sun is already setting (日已当暮), so we want to stop and sleep (仍欲止宿), but there is no place we can stop (則無處可留). Moreover, we want to gradually continue forward (更欲漸進), but the sea route is unknown (則水路未詳), so unavoidably we turn around (故不得還) and head to Jukam (向竹巌), where we disembark (而下陸), set up camp (結幕), and spend the night (留宿).

  2. Gerry,
Mr. Tanaka had written the instructions for read that is "※4月30日~5月9日の原本は別途掲示予定".

And also, I have mentioned that point.

I did not see that writing on Mr. Tanaka's site, and I did not see where you mentioned it. Did you mention it in English? Because, as you know, I do not read Japanese.

Anyway, if I am reading it right, Mr. Tanaka plans to post that part of the diary later? If he already had access to the diary, I wonder why he would post it separately?

I am amazed at how Mr. Tanaka gets access to all these old documents, and how his photos of them are so professional. For example, I do not know how he did it, but his photo of the map at the Samcheok Museum was amazingly clear, especially considering that the map was probably three or four feet away in a glass display.

Anyway, thanks for pointing that out to me.

  4. In his diary Inspector Lee describes an unnamed rock next to Choktae Rock (燭台岩也) by saying it "floats upright" (一石浮立) and adds, "It looks like a Bodhisattva (形如弥勒佛)." A floating rock? Bodhisattva? What could Inspector Lee have been talking about?

On his Web site, Mr. Tanaka posted a photo of THIS ROCK and labeled it "大巌(竹岩)," but if you look at the base of the rock, where it meets the water, it appears to be floating because the sea water over time has eroded the base, creating a kind of mushroom-head shape that makes it appear as it the rock is floating. But why describe it as looking like a Bodhisattva? Because I think Inspector Lee was imagining a painting of a Bodhisattva levitating, which means floating in the air just above the ground.

Unless other rocks off that shore are also floating, the photo Mr. Tanaka labeled as "Big Rock" might be the unnamed floating rock next to Choktae Rock (燭台岩).

However, I would say there are other floating rocks, and that Mr. Tanaka probably labeled his rock correctly, but I thought it would be a good example to show a possible reason for the description of a floating rock that looks like a Bodhisattva.

If we could find the "floating rock," then we might be able to determine where "Seokganju Cave" (名石間朱穴) was because Inspector Lee said the cave was on the shore near the floating rock.

    ReplyDelete
  5. After taking a closer look at Mr. Tanaka's "Big Rock," it does not seem to be eroded at the base as much as I first thought. The red-brown color near the base just made it appear to me as if it were floating. However, maybe when the tide goes out, it will turn into a floating rock? Actually, I suspect there is a better example of a floating rock nearby.

  6. If the two islands were in the sea on the south side (南便洋中有二小島) of "Seokganju Cave" (名石間朱穴) and “Ship Plank Cove” (船板邱尾), that would mean the cave and the cove would be on the north side of Gwaneumdo (觀音島). If the map were correct and “Wadal Ungtong Cove” (臥達雄通邱尾) was on shore between the cave and the cove, then it would also be north of Gwaneumdo, but, again, I do not think Wadal Ungtong Cove in 1882 was on shore. Why?

First, there was no beach drawn for it on the map like almost all the other harbors. Second, it was described as being "a harbor inside" one of the islands (其内浦). Third, it was described as a harbor where "ships entered with difficulty" (船路難進). Forth, it was described as having "stone walls on the left and right" (左右石壁), not in front.

  10. Gerry,
I have found this 9th day entry in the reverse side of the scanned page of Mr. Tanaka's image number 11.
Inspector Lee's diary is a Bound-pocket book made by significantly thinner papers.
Generally speaking, bound-pocket books are also made by stacking sheets of double-wide paper that have been folded individually, but unlike glued or sewn books, the stacked pages are bound by sewing the loose edge opposite the crease together with either thread or tightly wrapped, thread-like strips paper.
So, we can not read turn over sides.
No matter how clever Korean researchers may be, they will not notice this secret.
Mr. Tanaka is not responsible for it.
We should scold Samcheok Museum staff and Korean researchers for neglect of duty.

I do not see any evidence that the pages are folded. Besides, it does not make sense that Inspector Lee would fold pages of his diary so that they could not be read.

Mr. Tanaka posted the text from the 9th day and promised to post photos of the pages later, so he apparently already has the photos of the pages or knows where he can get them.

Also, I do not understand your logic for faulting the Korean researchers. You don't think they knew about the 9th Day text? Someone obviously knew about it because it has been posted.

I was not blaming Mr. Tanaka. I was simply wondering why he did not post the photos of the 9th Day text with the photos of the rest of the text.

  12. Gerry,

Kojima-san has found something is written on the back of the paper we can see now.

And he could read the letters which 李瑄根, the Korean scholar who introduced this document in 1963, has reprinted in his contribution.
So Kojima-san concluded the letters we can see now is the deferent part of the document.

    There are three parts;
    1. The original journal of 李奎遠
    2. The revised version of 鬱陵島検察日記
    3. 啓草本

    李瑄根 reprinted 2&3.
Tanaka-san’s reprint maybe came from李瑄根’s contribution.

We can see now “the original journal of 李奎遠” introduced by Tanaka –san’s photocopy here.

  13. Someone had changed the way of binding.

  14. Matsu,

Have either you or Mr. Kojima found any discrepancies or differences between the translated text and the text you see on the back side of the pages? If the two texts are different, then that might prove some kind of deception, but if they are the same, then I will still be wondering why the missing pages have not been posted. In other words, why hide pages of the original document if the text has already been made public?

Why would Mr. Tanaka promise to post photos of the missing pages if he did not already have them or think he could get them? Isn't it possible that Mr. Tanaka is simply waiting to post the pages for some other reason, possibly because he wants more time to confirm the transcription or to analyze the pages?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Matsu,

What do you mean by "the revised version of 鬱陵島検察日記"? Are there two different versions? As for the 啓草本, isn't that just a draft of a cleaned-up, official report of his inspection, written by 李奎遠 himself in the comfort of a building back on the mainland rather than in a tent in the wild of Ulleungdo?

    ReplyDelete
  16. By the way, I have revised my translation by changing "ship" to "boat," so as not to confuse it with the ship on which they traveled to the island. They were traveling around Ulleungdo in a small boat, not the larger ship.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Gerry,

This document includes Lee Gyu-Won’s diary of his inspection, and the draft for the report to the king Ko-jong.
It seems it was handwritten by one person.

Kojima san found there were letters on the hidden side of paper, which he thinks the revised version of his diary.

It was reprinted by 李瑄根, who introduced this document in 1963.

For some reason, someone fold the paper and filed as it is now.
That made the side reprinted by李瑄根 became hidden side of the paper.

We, Kojima-san and I, are trying to read all the document, though it may take a long time.

To my opinion, the important part of this document is the part they met Japanese in the island.
And they found the

As for the ‘boat’, yes, they were traveling in a small boat around the island, I agree.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Matsu,

How could Lee Seon-geun (李瑄根) have "revised" Lee Gyu-won's (李奎遠) diary? He would have had to erase what Gyu-won had written and then put in his own words in a different handwriting.

What makes you think the pages are folded? Can't the writing show through without the pages being folded? For example, the very first page of the diary shows through to the second page, and we can see photos of both pages. Doesn't that prove the pages are not folded?

Doesn't it make more sense that the photos of the diary pages of Inspector Lee's daily inspection entries have just not been made public, for whatever reason? Mr. Tanaka may already have the photos and has just not posted them, or he may have been given only photos of the pages that did not include those of the inspection. I would guess that Mr. Tanaka already has the photos of the inspection pages, but has just chosen not to post them for some reason.

Why do you consider the description of the sign to be important? Aren't the descriptions of the two neighboring islands more important? I would like to understand why Inspector Lee drew the neighboring islands as he did on his map. I would like to understand why 將軍巖 (General Rock) was drawn in the shape it was drawn. I would like to know the exact location of the “Wadal Ungtong Cove” (臥達雄通邱尾). Those things interest me more than the sign.

I understand the part about a bound book of folded pages, but how would that produce the mirror images you posted?

It seems they made a mistake when editing the photos, saving them as mirror images of themselves. If you look HERE, you can see that it is easy to reverse the process.

    ReplyDelete

Okay. I seen what you did. You reversed the images on purpose to copy the characters that bled through the page. But that doesn't prove the pages were folded. That only proves that there was writing on the back sides of the pages. When characters bleed through a page, they show up as mirror images of themselves.

Pick up one, unfolded, typed page, turn it over to the backside, and hold it up to a light. You will notice that the type on the opposite side is also reversed.

  22. Gerry,

I am not saying the descriptions of the two neighboring islands are not important.
It is the key to understand what 石島means in 勅令41号.

But first of all, we have to read what is written in the document.

The documents written on the reverse sides of others.
These are called 裏書 or 紙背文書.
For example, the following photos are these kinds of handwritten documents.

I cannot count the pages of the diary because I have never seen the diary. How do you know the number of pages in the diary? Did you count the pages yourself or did you just read it somewhere? If there really are 27 invisible pages, how were they counted, given that they are "invisible"?

The reason I am having trouble understanding what you and Matsu are trying to say is that you seen to claim the pages were folded to hide the pages concerning the inspection of Ulleungdo, but the only way that would be the case is if the entries were written on the back side of a written page, which was then folded. However, the photos to which you link show only folded pages with nothing written on their backsides.

Is it your claim that the diary entries were written on both sides of a page, which was then folded to hide the entries on one side? If that is your claim, then what proof do you have? The fact that the writing shows through a page? Wouldn't the writing show through a folded page even if nothing was written on the back side of the page?

Just because a certain number of the diary pages have been made public does not mean the diary was designed to hide the remaining pages.

  28. Gerry,
You have got hold of the wrong end of the stick.
It (裏書) is relatively popular by tradition in East Asia.
It is, so to speak, the palimpsest in Western culture.
Of course, the two are totally different in principles.
I and Matsu can see many evidences that 裏書 are included with 27 pages in total.
Precisely, 李瑄根's text is based on a kind of palimpsest.
Therefore we must decipher the 裏書 document.

    http://www.tanaka-kunitaka.net/ulleungdo/prosecution/07.jpg

    http://www.tanaka-kunitaka.net/ulleungdo/prosecution/08.jpg

    http://www.geocities.jp/tanaka_kunitaka98/prosecution/15.jpg

    http://dokdo-or-takeshima.blogspot.jp/2007/06/1994-san-in-chou-newspaper-article-on.html

    http://www.kr-jp.net/ronbun/park/park0910.pdf

    http://dokdo-or-takeshima.blogspot.jp/2007/06/1994-san-in-chou-newspaper-article-on.html

    http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/japan/products/645z-ir/top/img/bod_acc1_img01.jpg

    http://news.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/rim_info/2015/20151127_009960.html

  42. Howdy! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could locate a captcha plugin for my comment form? I'm using the same blog platform as yours and I'm having problems finding one? Thanks a lot!
