1700s? - "Dong Yeo Go Sil" (東輿攷實) - Map of Uljin

The map below is a map of Uljin (蔚珍) from an atlas entitled "Dong Yeo Go Sil (東輿攷實), which is part of the Asami Collection at the University of California at Berkeley. (See HERE.) I found the atlas on the "Center for Korean Studies Materials" Web site HERE.

The interesting thing about the map is that it shows two islands east of Uljin labeled "Ulleungdo" (鬱陵島) and "Muleungdo" (武陵島), with a note saying that Muleungdo is also called "Usan" (于山). Muleungdo is drawn to the west of Ulleungdo.

The maps in this atlas are similar to those found in the "Dong Yeo Bi Go" (東輿備攷) atlas, which is believed to have been made about 1682.

  1. Seems like there is no need for map studies going forward.

Recently Korean scholars, together with some Japanese, have found a proof that Japanese fishermen who collected resources from Dokdo had to pay their tax to Chosun, proportionally to the amount they have caught. This happened just before Japan's Dokdo claim, which happened right before WWII.

Some Japanese? Please teach me the name of the Japanese.
And there is no such record.

  3. This map is a good example proving Usando was not the name for Jukdo to the east of Ulleongdo.

There are some Korean old maps depicting Usando to the west of Ulleongdo, which means the Koreans were confused by the identity of Usando. But after Ahn Yong-bok Incident, the confusion got to be corrected.

  4. This Usando is double Ulleungdo. After the Ahn Yong-bok Incident, Korea came to recognize the Usando to be Jukdo though her official field investigation.

  6. Han Sem Kim
