Late 18th c., "Joseon Paldo Jido," Ulleungdo & Usando

Below is a cutout of the Korean island of Ulleungdo (鬱陵島) from the late 18th century Korean map, "Joseon Paldo Jido" (朝鮮八道地圖), which is stored in Seoul National University's Gyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies. Notice that the map shows "Usando" (于山島) as a small, neighboring island off Ulleungdo's northeast shore.

Korea claims that Usando was the old Korean name for "Dokdo" (Liancourt Rocks), but this map and many others show that Usando was just a small, neighboring island of Ulleungdo, most likely Ulleungdo's present-day neighboring island of Jukdo (竹島).

  2. Hi gromr,

Yes, it is the same map, with all the same stains. Unfortunately, I do not know the registration number since the book I got it from did not list it.

Thanks for pointing that map out to me. I have added it to the post.

    Happy new year.

  3. Thank you for upload full maps.
This map which I questioned about five island before.
Now I got to know It is not five islands but it is just a part of paper bursts on the map with Ullengdo and Usando.

On the explanation about this map by dokdocenter, they intensionally avoid to refer Usando. Also they intentionally upload this map with unclear part of Ulleungdo and Usando. Because this map is also unconfortable for Korean which shows Usando is Jukdo.
